THREE ︎︎︎︎︎ The proposed project emerged in contrast, creating a dialogue with the architecture situated at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes in 1959. Barnes’ orthogonal and regimented design is juxtaposed with the organic, polyhedron structures at the proposed addition, though elements of materiality, surrounding views, and overall connections to the natural environment refer back to the existing project. This dialogue continues with the proposed fermentation program; rather than focus on artistic crafts, the experimental nature of creating is re-interpreted to consumable products that originate from natural micro-organisms. Students and faculty reside within the small forest community to learn and experiment with craft brewing, kombucha making, pickeling, and sourdough bread baking, depending on the duration of stay. The CLT structure for each form is considered a separate element, doubling walls and removing faces to combine and create openings. This individuality of structure allows for the growth and reconfiguration of buildings as the program adapts over time, ultimately generating an architecture that is able to be re-imagined by generations to come. &nbsp; SARA | NY Design Awards 2021 MERIT AWARD RECIPIENT ︎︎︎︎︎ The project responds to the duality of urban condition through its focus on two realms : the rigid and flexible. This dichotomy relates to the existing opposing forces of movement and stability and the struggle to balance these with familial migration frequently found around Boyle Heights. In order to accommodate both the vehicular focused street front and pedestrian nature of the plaza, the façades respond accordingly by incorporating both rigid elements and circular, fluid typologies. The urban edges on Pennsylvania avenue and the western alley are anchored by the hinge generated on the north west corner. Systematic rigidity is incorporated internally through the grid pattern, which organizes and informs programming and circulation. The circular façades hint at the patterning of Mariachi Plaza, becoming an extension into the building. Thus the resulting form is one half displaying the rigid and stable, while the other half embraces flexibility and movement as it opens up towards the community. Overall, the project aims to encourage community engagement, acting as a point of convergence between the pedestrian and the realm of the larger urban framework - tying together two themes of movement program relies on a connection to the surrounding manufacturing district, through understanding its history, culture, and sense of community. Initial site analysis identifies historic sites, community-oriented programs, shops, and open spaces. These spaces are connected through a series of pedestrian pathways, which are rendered with the pedestrians perspective in mind. Public programs are suggested as areas where visitors and community members can learn and enjoy both production and consumption. One space is dedicated to an ice cream parlour and bakery, echoing the historic dairy plants and bakeries scattered throughout Harlem and Manhattanville. The district’s rich history of breweries is referenced through the suggestion of a new brewery connecting to a restaurant space. In response to the transportation infrastructure that characterized the site, the showcasing of a more sustainable mode of transportation is suggested through the implementation of a bike shop that VIDEO PRESENTATION ] ︎︎︎︎︎ The urban overlook library elevates urban public space, helping to reverse the exclusivity of occupation that is typical of a city skyline. Public access to urban heights in the library helps to emphasize the importance of education and civic discourse in Chicago’s urban landscape. Within the library, the traditional programmed areas on the lower floors evolve into more expansive areas for community programming, expanding upwards and capitalizing on the magnificent views that surround the building. There is transition from the traditional library spaces to the newer public program areas as one ascends through the building. This echoes the broader transition that Characterizes the design of the libraries of the past evolving into more modern day public spaces. Sited within the heart of Chicago, the location along Lake Shore Drive holds many urban elements of this city that are compressed into a small area. Museums, universities, healthcare facilities, and outdoor recreation spaces are all featured in close proximity to this site. Placing a library here allows for connection between each of these elements as a way to integrate the urban dynamics, Emphasizing the importance of public access by elevating the public spaces,
